AT 7.30am on May 18, a group of Wolverley students, buzzing with excitement, boarded the coach for the first leg of their trip to Spain, writes Joe Ludwig.
From John Lennon Airport, we flew to Madrid then took a train to Ciudad Real and booked into our four star hotel.
The next few days were spent in our partner school, sitting in on their lessons and experiencing life as a Spanish student. We made a lot of new friends and picked up a variety of Spanish phrases.
In the evenings we went to different restaurants where we sampled traditional Spanish food and had the opportunity to try out our newly improved language skills – often with unexpectedly hilarious results! On one occasion, Miss Knill told me to ask for the bill and assured me that the phrase is “Un beso, por favor”, which I duly repeated to the waiter. The look of shock on the waiter’s face told me that something was wrong –and Miss Knill took great delight in telling me that I had, in fact, asked the poor man for a kiss!
We also spent some time in Madrid, where we visited the Bernabeu Stadium, home of Real Madrid C.F. and the Plaza de Toros (the bullfighting arena) as well as a couple of very interesting museums. On the final day we managed to squeeze a shopping trip into our itinerary before boarding the flight back to England.
