PUPILS are giving the George Formby sound a modern twist at an after-school club.
Wolverley CE Secondary School students are being taught to play the ukulele by teacher Robert Morgan, who bought the instrument “for fun” during the summer holidays.
He said: “When I brought the ukulele into school, there was so much interest from students and staff we decided to set up an after school club.
“The school bought a set of instruments to give the students a chance to play without having to buy one of their own. If they get the bug and want to play more, though, a ukulele is fairly cheap to buy compared with other instruments.
“It is also a good instrument to learn as it has a natural progression to the guitar. The club has students from year seven right through to sixth form and has really taken off well.”
The club is part of the school’s enrichment programme of more than 40 after-school clubs, which include lessons in rock bands and music theory.
