The United Nations has designated 10 December as Human Rights Day. Every year since 1982 Soroptimist International marks the day with an appeal by the International President. For this year International President, Hanne Jensbo, is asking for funding for 'Soroptimists for Education and Leadership' - our new long term project.

The project has three objectives: 1) to empower women and girls by ensuring they have the skills and confidence to achieve their full potential 2) To change attitudes and social structures in the larger communities through education and awareness raising so that women and girls can meaningfully participate in society 3) To impart leadership skills to women and girls at local, national and international levels to ensure that women's voices are represented in decision-making.

Soroptimists across the world are already involved in education and leadership projects at local, national and international levels.

International President Hanne says: "Together, we will work towards our chosen common goal to improve the status of women and girls through education and leadership. Undertaking activities that ensure a meaningful, sustainable and powerful global impact. The 2010 Soroptimist International President's Appeal will allow us to support outstanding Soroptimist projects around the world that empower women and girls through education and leadership - the more we raise the more we can do."

Members of Kidderminster Club attended a Regional Meeting on 4 December which acknowledged Human Rights Day. The Club supports the International President's 10 December Appeal and in recent years has enabled the education of young children in Moldova regarding the dangers of trafficking, provided vocational training for young girls resident at the Desta Mender Village at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia and supplied women and children in Benin with malaria nets.
