EXPECTATIONS are a funny thing and it's hard to know whether Harriers are living up to them or falling short after a solid if unspectacular start to the new season in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Seven points from four games represents the best start to the season the Aggborough outfit have had since the 2000-01 campaign but manager Steve Burr believes there's still a lot more to come from his young squad.

Fans don't seem too happy with the start either, although beating Southport on Saturday to pick up their first home win of the season would go along way to winning over those, who did not witness the good performances against Lincoln and Cambridge.

It would be foolish to suggest that Harriers have played consistently well but if Burr is correct and Harriers do get even better then the signs are there that could be another fine season.

It's hard to judge what fans should expect. Naturally after their heroic attempts to reach the play-offs fell slightly short last season, many fans are confident they will finish fifth in the table and give themselves a chance of reaching the Football League.

Burr is ambitious and has been clear that he would love to improve on last season's finish but he's also been realistic that this will be very hard for Harriers.

Harriers' manager has worked very hard in the summer to rebuild his squad and even spent some money securing the services of Kyle Storer but compared to the money Fleetwood and York have forked out what they have invested is a drop in the ocean.

With that in mind, Harriers fans must be careful not to get too frustrated if Harriers are not in the top five.

After the traumatic events of January and February, when the club teetered on the brink of financial ruin and administration, it would be easy to say we should all be grateful to have a club to support.

That's a bit too defeatist for me, what's the point of supporting a club if they are not at least trying to be ambitous?

Instead, fans must enjoy having a manager who wants to reach for the stars and has a team that four games into the season looks capable of challenging for the play-offs.

And perhaps, if the football gods are with them, Harriers can make the promised land.
