WORK to demolish maisonettes in Kidderminster to make way for new homes is almost complete with the final stages being carried out next week.

The Community Housing Group is knocking down five maisonette blocks and building 97 apartments and houses off Hurcott Road, at the junction with Stourbridge Road.

Once the demolition work is complete, Kier Partnership Homes will build 22 two-bedroom houses, 18 with three bedrooms, 11 with four bedrooms and 46 two bedroom flats, on the same site.

Three 12 storey high-rise tower blocks - Derwent House, Windermere House and Coniston House - will remain on the site with the new properties being built around them.

There will also be 141 car parking spaces - 42 less than before - and 46 cycle spaces. A permit-based residents parking scheme is expected to be put in place to stop spaces being abused.

Four vehicular access routes will be provided with three on Hurcott Road and one on Stourbridge Road.

Demolition work started on the site last month (December) and the work forms the first stage of the Re-Wyre regeneration project for the area.
