Kidderminster Soroptimists were delighted to unveil a wooden bench in the playground of Years 3-4 at Birchen Coppice Primary School recently. Members support the school in a number of ways but were very pleased to donate the funds to purchase the bench when a request was made by Sarah Turner, the school’s Community Activities Co-ordinator. The bench is very sturdy and has environmental credentials, being made from recycled oxcarts. It has a wonderful view over heath land towards the West Midlands Safari Park and will be well used by the pupils.
Joint President Denise Carson says ‘Club members were delighted to have made the purchase of a bench possible to enhance the playground – it makes such a difference to the pupils and their playground is now the envy of other classes. We are enjoying working with the school in lots of ways and it is part of our mission to help women and children, especially in our local area where there is such a need.’ Other activities undertaken by the Club include supporting the school at the weekly coffee mornings held for parents after pupil assemblies, as well as special events such as the school fayres. The latest project is a reading mentor project with members sitting with pupils once week to hear them read to help improve literacy for the Stats tests.
