Our May speaker was Jan Golding, Chief Executive of Roots HR, the only Human Resource Consultancy that is a social enterprise in the UK. The company, founded in 2008, has a team of eight consultants who provide consultancy to not-for-profit organisations, predominantly charities, clubs and associations as well as schools, youth organisations and even MPs.
Recounting her ‘Golden Threads’, since the age of 6 Jan had been interested in the world of business and wanted to be a professional women with a business suit, briefcase and company car. Her career began as an Avon Rep, gaining sales experience and becoming involved in the recruitment of other Avon Reps. That was followed by time with the TV rental company Granada, a software company and a hotel chain initially in the Midlands during which time she gained HR qualifications.
Based in Exeter, Jan was very aware of the city’s homeless people and began to explore ways to help and worked as a part-time consultant for a local charity helping those with alcohol and drug problems. Using her experience, she concentrated on running the business side by setting up the infrastructure to provide better people management leading to improved the service by reducing the waste of hard won donations. Since moving back to the Midlands and based locally in Kidderminster, Jan founded Roots HR and includes as her clients, Birmingham’s Town Hall and Symphony Hall, Sport 4 Life, The British Association of Social Workers and the Worcester YMCA.
She feels very passionately about helping civil society organisations achieve positive, trusting and professional relationships with their staff which result in the further development and growth of the organisation.
