Getting into the Olympic spirit, Kidderminster Soroptimists held their own Alternative Olympics on Saturday 28 July when 50 or so members, family and friends gathered in Far Forest to play a range of games. To a rousing chorus of ‘Chariots of Fire, President Hilary Thompson declared the games open with four ‘national’ teams representing GB, Germany and Zimbabwe (our friendship link countries), and a special team Cornwall. Joining in the fun was also Su Roxburgh from Stourbridge Club. Our Olympic Flame was lit taking the form of five differently coloured garden flares.

Fierce competition took place in the golf, petanque and croquet events and a particularly lively contest was played out at the giant garden Jenga game. After a break for refreshments and ice creams, the field events saw everybody trying out their skills at pistol and arrow shooting through hoops – aiming ‘velcroed’ balls at a target and bagel discus throwing.

The final event was a race with a twist: balancing a plastic plate on one’s head without dropping it. Two qualifying rounds and then an exciting, almost photo-finish finale brought the competitions to an end. The winning team in each event was presented with a Gold Medal, followed by a great Afternoon Tea Picnic. A great fun day was had by all and the Club also raised a small amount from a raffle towards their charity fund.
