BEWDLEY'S Alison Young admits she is looking forward to her first Olympic medal race on Monday.

Having finished in the top 10 highest ranked boats at the end of the opening series of 10 races, the 25-year-old will contest the final double points race bidding to guarantee the highest finish possible at her first ever Olympic regatta.

It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Young could still end up claiming silverware, sitting fifth overall, 18 points off bronze medal position with 20 points to play for in the final race.

But having been one of five sailors disqualified for a false start from the opening race of today, the Trimpley Sailing Club athlete admits these Games have been an invaluable learning experience.

Young, who finished fourth in her second race of today, said: “I was pretty disappointed to be honest. We just got a little bunched up and I got pushed over at the start so that was a little bit frustrating but it was a better second race.

“The medal race will be a great race and a great experience. This week’s been good and a great learning opportunity to take forward. I’ve learnt that you need to keep chipping away and looking for the opportunities.”

The Laser Radial medal race is scheduled for Monday 6 August (1pm) on the spectator Nothe course.
