A trio of young Kidderminster boxers all from the same boxing club have made local history by becoming England Boxing Midlands and National Schools boxing champions at their age group.
The boxers all aged 13 years but boxing in different weight categories Trey King (44.5kg), John Boy Hodgkins (54kg) and Bailey Wilding (59kg), train at Mikeys Boxing Gym, based in Whitehouse Road, Kidderminster, where Trey and Bailey started there journey in 2015 when the gym opened with John Boy Joining them Shortly after.
They have all shown over the years they have what it takes to achieve there goals in boxing even through the pandemic they never gave up still training hard taking part in all zoom sessions and training hard at home and when they got back to the gym where more determined than ever.
The boys all got through to the national final, with John Boy Hodgkins receiving a bye to the final, after previously stopping an opponent from Manchester in quarter Final, Trey King winning his semi-final on points and Bailey Wilding stopping his opponent in the second round.
The finals day was really exciting, with Trey King putting in a superb effort to win the golden gloves by beating a strong West Ham boxer on points.
John Boy Hodgkins lost a hard fought contest on a split decision and Bailey Wilding won his golden gloves by not only stopping his opponent in the 3rd round, but also picked up a ‘boxer of the tournament’ award as voted for by England Talent coaches.
The 2 Winners have now been invited to an England talent day with England Boxing (The national governing body for olympic style boxing) and all 3 will continue on there journey working towards competing for England over the next few years.
The gym is co-owned by husband and wife team Mike and Kara Mikolajczyk who only opened the gym in 2015.
Stated owner Mike, “There are dozens of boxing clubs in the Midlands area and only a handful get to have champion boxers, so we are really proud to have 3 boxers who have reached this milestone at the age of 13 in there first National championships.
“It is a tribute to their hard work and dedication, plus the support given to them by their families and the time put into them by the volunteer coaching staff with a special mention to Coaches Rob Conway, John Hodgkins, Dib Hillyard who were with them at the finals and to our members who continue to help us grow and provide a great facility for our boxers ,this support has all contributed to their achievement.
