“Downfall” is an extremely thought provoking film about the last days of Hitler and Berlin in the besieged city in 1945. The small group of 22 who braved the Arctic weather to turn out for it's showing at King Charles High School last night were rewarded with a wonderful evening.
After supper provided by some of the school's catering students - heartening traditional German winter warmer soups, with black bread, followed by tasty gateaux - guests settled down in the comfortable science block theatre for the viewing. In German with English subtitles, it was indeed very moving, particularly for those who had ever visited Berlin – and especially for the older members of the Twining group with experience of the city in the immediate post-war era.
Most of the members of the school's adult German language evening class attended, along with members of the Twinning Association. Sadly, no school pupils could come as they were at the carol service. The generosity of the school in organising the event was much appreciated. Plans are afoot for another such evening - perhaps with a much lighter weight film next time!
