Phoenix changed their fortunes this week, when the Under 14 and Under 15 Girls both secured Wins in the Mercian Fortis Junior Football League.

St Johns Girls 2 v 3 Wyre Forest Phoenix

The under 14 Girls arrived at St John’s looking to get their first win and they started the game in a positive fashion, controlling possession and creating several chances. It wasn’t long before Chloe Reading scored the opening goal, delightfully slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. The girls controlled the game, passing the ball around beautifully, causing the St John’s defence severe problems. Needless to say, the second goal arrived after another exquisite strike courtesy of Izzy Smith. Despite more attempts last thirty seconds of the first half saw St John’s produce a quick throw to somehow squeeze the ball past the keeper 

After an unfortunate injury to Zoe Willets, St John’s were increasing the pressure and after an excellently timed through ball, their striker found herself one-on-one against the Keeper who brilliantly blocked the fierce shot. Shortly after, a fantastic long throw was read expertly by Chloe to catch cold the St John’s defence and her fantastic run was matched by an exquisite outside of the foot finish into the bottom right corner, taken on the half volley! However, again St John’s somehow found an immediate response and scored again. 

The girls remained calm and continued to create chances, and near misses, played out the remaining minutes to take the win at 2-3. 

The player of the match was awarded to Chloe Reading, because without her goals and match intelligence, the game could have ended differently, despite numerous contenders this week. Goals : Chloe Reading (2), Izzy Smith (1).
 

Wyre Forest Phoenix Flyers 4 v 3 Walsall Phoenix

The Under 15 Girls welcomed Walsall Phoenix for their 3rd game of the season, with just the basic 11 their opponents started with just 10 Players.

It took just 7 minutes for Ellie Jones to plant a rebound to put the Flyers ahead.  Despite being in control the Flyers just couldn’t finish and it was disappointing when after 23 minutes Walsall managed to break through to equalise. Then 2 minutes on Walsall scored again to take the lead at 1-2.

Half time a change around and the Flyers picked up the pace. It took 5 minutes for Fleur Connolly to pick up a rebound to bring it back.  The Flyers were playing well but Walsall got a break and beat the defence again to score after 21 minutes.  The Flyers had more in reserve and Charlotte made a good run in midfield to shoot but a challenge from the linesman made the ref change his mind.  The Flyers were awarded a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard box which Fleur made light work of for her second goal.  Walsall were looking on the back foot when a great pass through to Sydney Harris in the middle came 2 minutes later, she ran for goal, beat the defence and shot well to plant the ball in the back of the net to take the lead.  Despite another close decision and near misses the Flyers got their first well deserved win of the season to finish 4-3.
