SAMURAI Judo Club's juniors took on opponents from around the country at the Open Championships at the club’s Gilt Edge home.

Sixty clubs descended on Kidderminster to take part, with the hosts picking up six gold medals to finish second to Stroud.

Samurai’s girls dominated Saturday’s junior championships with Leah Grosvenor, Becky Hobby and Bryony Griffiths landing a hat-trick of gold medals.

Grosvenor picked up the club’s and her first gold medal after beating a local rival from Worcester in the final.

The outcome of the match was never in doubt after a high score in the first minute.

In her other challenges, Grosvenor effortlessly beat her first opponent from Wolverhampton followed by defeating a Bedfordshire girl from the Renrukan Judo Club.

Hobby claimed the club’s second gold after she emphatically defeated two London players.

She saw off a girl from Shropshire to land first place, with all of her fights lasting less than a minute.

The final gold of the day came from Griffiths through a hard-fought victory over the current British Schools Champion from Bradley Stoke Judo Club in Bristol.

It was an interesting tactical battle as Griffiths had the better attacks while her opponent relied on counter attacks.

However, the Samurai student unleashed one attack in which the other girl failed to counter to give the home fighter the advantage and went onto take victory.

Darcie Hancocks picked up a silver medal for the girls after she came up against heavier opponents after the lower and higher categories were merged.

Angel Wilkes also won silver after a tremendous battle with a girl from Dudley but unfortunately lost by two scores to one.

Bronze medals were won for the girls by Charlotte Spokes and Charlotte Read.

There was also success for the boys with two silver medals being picked up by Cameron Hobby and Patrick Kealey.

Cameron and Patrick had hard-fought battles in their finals.

James Hemer, Joe Edwards, Luke Haynes, Ben Dunn, Andy Calloway, Matthew Hemer and Joe Dunn all picked up bronze medals.
