KIDDERMINSTER’S Claire Cashmore will be aiming to make the London 2012 Paralympics a golden Games.
The 24-year-old swimmer is hoping to add to her collection of three bronze medals won in Athens and Beijing by bringing home the ultimate accolade.
Cashmore, whose left arm is severed below the elbow, is ranked as the second fastest in the world this year in the S8 100m breaststroke and will be going all out for victory at the London Aquatics Centre.
She will also be looking to impress in the 200m individual medley and 4x100m medley and freestyle relay races, if picked as part of the Team GB quartets.
Cashmore is currently completing her preparations for London in a training camp in Manchester but father Duncan believes she’s in good shape ahead of the tournament.
He said: “Claire’s in as good a shape as she can be going into the Games and is looking forward to competing.
“You can obviously never tell until the day what is going to happen but for her the ultimate achievement is to win gold.”
Team GB go into the tournament with high expectations after the success of their counterparts at the Olympics earlier in the month, aiming to repeat their second place in China four years ago.
Cashmore is also one of several GB athletes who have been given extra prominence as part of Games broadcaster Channel 4’s ‘Meet the Superhumans’ advertising campaign.
She features in several adverts, including an emotional 90 second promotional film, as well as billboard posters.
“As the advertising points out, the Olympics was only a taster ahead of the Paralympics,” joked Duncan.
“It’s great to see people like Claire, who have worked just hard as any Olympians, get some recognition.
“The success of the Olympics has only increased the excitement ahead of next week.”
The London Games are set to be the most successful tournament yet with record ticket sales.
Claire commences her quest for silverware next Thursday in the 100m butterfly, with the breaststroke on Saturday, September 1.
The 4x100m medley relay is on September 3, with the 200m individual medley on Thursday, September 6 and the 100m freestyle 24 hours later.
