Forecasters at the Met Office said that, while some areas will remain dry, thunderstorms are likely to develop this afternoon and evening from the east and move relatively slowly westwards or northwestwards.

Heavy rain accompanied by frequent lightning is likely where thunderstorms occur, with up to 25 to 30 millimetres of rain possibly in one or two hours in a few places, while as much as 50 millimetres could fall in some spots.

There may also be hail in some places, the Met Office said.

Forecasters warned that the thunderstorms developing across the warning area this afternoon and evening may lead to travel disruption and some flooding.
